Introductory Course for Named Veterinary Surgeons

  • Information: The training course aims to provide a broad introduction to the field of laboratory animal science and medicine for Veterinary Surgeons in general practice and others who may become a Named Veterinary Surgeon under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. This course meets the requirements of the Home Office for training Named Veterinary Surgeons and is approved by the RCVS. The tutors are veterinary surgeons with over 40 years experience in laboratory animal medicine between them. One is a European and RCVS Recognised Specialist in laboratory animal science, and the other is a former Home Office Inspector.

These workshops provide hands-on experience in procedures for aquatic laboratory animals. These modular workshops are designed to provide both introductory and advanced training in aquatic animal health. The first two-day workshop “Health and Husbandry of Aquatic Laboratory Animals” can be taken separately or combined with the “Advanced Aquatic Animal Care and Husbandry”. 1st European Conference on the Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of Animal Experiments in Ecotoxicology

2012 Infectious Disease Training & Exercise

  • Information: This 3-day infectious disease training and exercise introduces participants to a variety of topics in infectious disease including: vaccine preventable diseases; nosocomial infections; tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases; vector-borne and zoonotic diseases; food-borne diseases; and information on outbreaks and investigations. Participants will obtain the most current infectious disease information and have the opportunity to network with a variety of partners including state and local health, infection control practitioners, public and community health nurses, health educators, epidemiologists, sanitarians, correctional facility representatives, animal control agencies, preparedness coordinators, laboratorians, border health counterparts, and university faculty and students. Sessions shall be led by experts in the field of infectious disease with emphasis on current trends. Fish and Amphibian Embryos as Alternative Models in Toxicology and Teratology

Information: Fish and amphibian embryo models are gaining increasing popularity in the area of toxicology, both in research and potential regulatory application. These models exhibit a number of advantages which make them superior and/or complementary to others. In compliance with international animal welfare regulations, the fish and amphibian embryo models provide an ethically acceptable small scale analysis system with the complexity of a complete organism. A suite of available advanced methodologies allows various types of experimental approaches ranging from phenotypic observations to “omics” analysis. The ultimate goal of the symposium is to promote the development of the fish and frog embryo models as potential alternatives to animal testing. A first very successful workshop was hold in 2010 in Karlsruhe, Germany with a strong focus on the zebrafish model. While the zebrafish remains one of the most important model the second symposium and workshop will extend its focus to other fish and amphibian species with similar features. The symposium aims to bring together scientists using fish and frog embryo models, exchange knowledge, ideas and latest developments in the context of toxicology and teratology. Invited lectures will focus on specific topics. Discussion groups will allow to identify major advantages, limitations, new fields and future research needs of the fish/amphibian embryo model and to establish collaborations.
